This success is the result of a consistently implemented transformation strategy that closely integrates energy efficiency, renewable energy, and a transparent analysis of energy consumption. “The early transition to renewable energy and the expansion of our on-site power generation have had a very rapid impact,” explains Dr. Georg Härdtle, Energy Management Officer at häwa GmbH. Since 2014, häwa has been operating a certified energy management system in accordance with DIN ISO 50001, which records energy flows and CO₂ emissions in detail and visualizes them using Sankey diagrams. This transparency creates a robust basis for decision-making and enables efficiency measures to be implemented in a targeted and effective manner.
For emissions in the Scope 1 and Scope 2 categories, häwa developed a CO₂ reduction roadmap in 2022. The starting point was the base year 2021, with approximately 2.6 million kg of CO₂. The planned transformation path envisaged an annual reduction of about four percent; a reduction of just under 17% was to be achieved up to the end of 2025. In fact, however, the target had already been met by a good 55%. This ten-year lead underscores the high effectiveness of the measures implemented.
häwa achieved particularly significant results through the complete switch to green electricity, the substantial expansion of photovoltaic systems, the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable alternatives, and the electrification of the vehicle fleet. The construction of the new administrative building and the new paint shop also makes a significant contribution: The modern powder coating plant uses CO₂-neutral local district heating and features a patented heat recovery system that reduces energy consumption by approximately 25% compared to the old plant.
On the path to achieving climate neutrality by 2045, häwa plans to further increase energy efficiency, develop additional photovoltaic areas, and expand its own electricity generation. At the same time, the company is continuously optimizing its production, logistics, and heating processes. In the future, there will also be an increased focus on Scope 3 emissions—that is, emissions along the upstream and downstream value chain, which are becoming increasingly important due to new EU regulations.
Customers and partners are responding very positively to the rapid progress. Sustainability in the supply chain is becoming increasingly important—and the significant reduction in emissions strengthens trust in häwa. Within the company as well, this success provides additional motivation and confirms that we are on the right track.
